SHILLONG: East Khasi Hills SP Davis N Marak on Friday said that ignorance of people was a key reason behind increasing incidents of cyber-crime in the state

Speaking at a deliberation organized at Shillong College on the   topic of ‘Surf Smart’ and ‘Free Being Me’, Davis Marak said that lack of awareness and   ignorance among people was fueling incidents cyber-crimes in the state,

Stating that information technology has become a part of everyone’s life, however, a section of people sometimes remained hooked to social media and tended to forget their duties and responsibilities.

Urging students to take precaution while surfing the Internet via laptop, PC or through their smart phones by installing updated antivirus to curb cyber-crime, he asked them not to share their details to unknown persons on social media.

On the subject of Scouts and Guides, the SP said, “Scouts and Guides can prepare children to become responsible adults and citizens and it’s an important extracurricular activity.”

“Academics alone will not help the students to excel in life but what is more important is that the students need to have an all-round personality development which includes academics, extracurricular activities etc.,” he said.

He also assured that the district police   would continue their awareness programmes on a number of subjects like drug abuse, human trafficking, crime against women, cyber-crimes beside others in schools and colleges of the district.
