NONGSTOIN: The HSPDP had significant presence in West Khasi Hills especially in Nongstoin, but most recently, many leaders have left the party dampening its prospects in the 2018 polls.
This can be seen by the decision of former HSPDP youth wing (Nongstoin constituency) not to support the party in the upcoming 2018 elections.
In fact, the HSPDP youth wing in Nongstoin was dissolved by the MLA himself without any reason.
The leaders of the former youth wing of the HSPDP along with the presidents and secretaries of different units which fall under polling stations of Nongstoin constituency organized a meeting on Friday which was attended by 40 members of different units.
After the meeting, K. Marngar, the former secretary of the youth wing of Nongstoin, told reporters that the decision to quit the party was because the central body of HSPDP in Shillong has not done anything to solve the problem within the party in Nongstoin.
Marngar also criticized the leaders of the party who, according to him, only want to get rid of party workers rather than uniting them.
He said that the party leaders should have also accepted other members from various parties who are willing to join its fold.
Marngar said that ever since Ardent Basaiawmoit took over as the leader of the party from late leader Hopingstone Lyngdoh, the party had witnessed many problems.
He further said the performance of the party is not upto the mark unlike the past, and this will reflect in the coming elections.
Marngar said the youths had always believed and followed the footsteps and principles laid down by late Hopingstone Lyngdoh and that they will never forget what he had taught and believed.
He also pointed that the present leaders have done things which are against the principles laid down by late Lyngdoh, and that is the reason why the youth leaders have decided not to support the party in the upcoming polls.
Marngar said that in the past few months, the youths who were neglected by the party had organized several meetings and it was then that they decided to quit the party.
When asked whether they are willing to join any other party, Marngar replied that they are yet to make any decision, but added that the decision will be made at an appropriate time.
Asked about the strength of the youth wing, Marngar said that there are around 800 youths who took the decision to quit HSPDP.
