Woman killed, 3 injured as vehicle hits them on city pavement

SHILLONG: A woman was killed and three others seriously injured when a vehicle driven by a teen-aged woman rammed into them on a pavement in the heart of the city on Saturday morning. The police have registered a suo moto case seized the vehicle.

The Superintendent of Police (Traffic), N K Syiem said that the mishap occurred when one Wagon-R vehicle (ML05 G 0051) driven by an 18 –year-old girl Neelakshi Thakur, came over to the pavement and hit the four pedestrians after the driver apparently lost control of it.

The vehicle was coming from Nongthymmai, National Highway 44 towards Jingkieng Nongthymmai   and the driver lost control of the vehicle on reaching United Bank of India branch near Vespa showroom and ran into the four persons on the pavement.

A seriously injured woman identified as Ralbinoda Ramsiej (34) succumbed to her injuries in the hospital while three persons – Bitola Suiam (56), Rebina Suiam (36) and one garbage collector Albert Kharbuli (19) who were   walking on the footpath, seriously injured as the vehicle dragged them inside the compound of one Wansila Kharkongor.

The vehicle also damaged the iron gate of the residential compound, a stationary i20 car and the walls of the house belonging to Wansila Kharkongor.

According to SP Traffic, 108 ambulances shifted all of the victims to hospital where Ralbinoda Ramsiej succumbed to her injuries. The body was handed over her relatives after the post-mortem had been conducted.
