Minority students’ leader shot dead in Assam

GUWAHATI: Unidentified gunman shot dead the president of All Bodo Minority Students’ Union (ABMSU), Lafikul Islam, at Titaguri market area in Kokrajhar district of western Assam under Bodoland Territorial Autonomous Council (BTAC) areas at around 4.20 P.M. on Tuesday.

Kokrajhar Superintendent of Police (SP), Rajen Singh quoting eyewitness accounts said that the ABMSU leader was gunned down by two miscreants who came on a motorcycle wearing helmets. He did not wanted to blame any militant group for the murder prompt without carrying out thorough investigation.

Meanwhile, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) and Communist Party of India (Marxist) state unit have condemned the murder of the ABMSU leader and demanded thorough inquiry into the killing and apprehension of culprits.

The incident occurred just over one hour after the Prime Minister Narendra Modi who was on a day long visit to Guwahati to assess the region’s flood situation, left Assam.

The Bodoland areas in Assam has history several bouts of communal violence and riot in recent past and considered a  very sensitive area.
