SHILLONG: The Public Accounts Committee has directed the state education department to submit a detailed report on the dismal condition of the Kiang Nangbah Government College in Jowai.
The committee on Tuesday summoned the secretary of the education department W.R. Lyngdoh along with officials of the state PWD to seek an explanation on why the boys’ hostel of the college has not been completed till date.
The committee was informed by the officials that only 60 per cent work of the project has been completed and that the contractor had stopped the work due to non sanction of funds.
The project cost was Rs 1.12crore and the officials informed that the work has just started for the remaining portion of the hostel and that Rs 2crore has been sanctioned for the extension of the college building.
Besides, the committee was also irked at the fact that the girls’ hostel, completed a year ago, was yet to be functional.
The committee also expressed its reservations over the exodus of teachers from the college saying that seven out of 15 teachers in the morning classes have already resigned as they were paid a paltry amount of Rs 5000 per month while there were no teachers in English and Mathematics subjects in Classes XI and XII.
“The condition of the college is unsatisfactory and is in a dismal state,” chairman of the committee, Paul Lyngdoh, told reporters after the sitting of the committee.
According to Lyngdoh, the committee was also disturbed by the fact that 26 teaching staff and 9 non teaching staff who are working against non sanctioned posts have not been paid their salaries since October last year.
“The secretary could not answer many of our queries and hence we have asked them to submit a detailed report,” Lyngdoh said.
Interestingly, the college has already submitted a proposal to the State Government to sanction these posts.
“All the revelations indicate sheer lack of coordination between the college, directorate and the department,” Lyngdoh added.
The morning shift of the college has around 1300 students.
