SHILLONG: As many as 42,000 households under 27 Dorbar Shnongs in Shillong city who are outside the jurisdiction of Shillong Municipal Board will get colour coded dustbins.

The dustbins would be distributed under the Asian Development Bank (ADB) project meant for segregation of biodegradable and non-biodegradable wastes at the doorstep of residents and the project has finished in municipal areas of the town.

Sources informed that the green and blue dustbins   had already started arriving in the city and it would be distributed in those localities which has signed a tripartite agreement   for the project.

Apart from dustbins, the process of distributing garbage collection vehicles has already been started and more than 25 out of 52 vehicles have already been distributed to the Dorbar Shnongs.

According to sources, as many as 1.3 lakh people in the city have also been trained   about the solid waste management   and majority of them are now practicing segregation of wastes.

However, the project will not be implemented in areas falling under the Shillong Cantonment Board   since the project cannot be applied in Army Establishments and the Board has been asked to manager its own dustbins.

When asked about the shopkeepers in the town who have not yet adhered to the direction of the Government to procure the green and blue dustbins on their own for the segregation of wastes, sources informed that a special task force has been constituted in Police Bazar and some shopkeepers are volunteering install those dustbins.

Sources also pointed out that the task force would now issue   notices to shopkeepers and this would be the third warning for them to buy the dustbins.

The task force also has the power to penalize anyone who makes the place dirty by throwing garbage based on the order of the National Green Tribunal, source said.

In addition, the Urban Affairs department is helping the Shillong Municipal Board and the task force to implement the rules strictly and to come up with a micro plan for Police Bazar.

It was further informed that the Shillong Municipal Board was now deploying its teams three times a day for garbage collection in Police Bazar and other important roads.
