GUWAHATI: Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Thursday promised the flood-affected people of Assam to raise the state’s perennial problem of flood in the Parliament while demanding adequate relief and compensation to the flood-hit people from the government.

Congress vice-president came to the state this morning to make an on-the-spot study of the flood situation and talk to the flood-affected people in the worst-hit Lakhimpur district of eastern Assam.

After his arrival at Lilabari airport in Lakhimpur, the Congress leader went straight to Bogolijan area in Lakhimpur district where the river breached its embankment to inundate a large area causing much hardship to the people.

He took a ride on a country boat to assess the trail of destruction left by the flood in the area and also talked to a section of flood-affected people.

The Congress leader stated that the government must ensure that those flood-hit who were yet to receive any relief and compensation must be provided with the same immediately. He also promised to raise the issue of Assam’s perennial flood problem in the Parliament.

“Since the Congress is neither in power in Assam nor in the Centre, we will try our best to raise the issue of Assam flood in the Parliament so as to bring succor to the affected people,” he said.

The latest wave of flood in the state affected over 25 lakh people and damages standing crop over 2.09 Lakh hectares of land. At least 82 persons have died in the latest wave of flood in the state.

From Lakhimpur, Rahul Gandhi flew to Silchar to attend the funeral of Congress veteran Santosh Mohan Deb who died on Wednesday.
