SHILLONG: The army does not allow civilians to pass through certain areas in the city but when it is time for recruitment, it remains oblivious to the problems of civilians instead of easing them, feel many residents of Bishnupur.
For the last two days, many residents of Bishnupur are having a harrowing time as candidates for army recruitment are crowding the locality.
A person whose parents’ house is near the 119 TA Bn of Assam Regiment in Bishnupur said on Thursday that whenever there is recruitment, which is held twice a year, Bishnupur residents become the worst sufferers.
According to him, the entire road was blocked by the candidates for the last two days and it was difficult for people and vehicles to pass.
Moreover, women and schoolgoing children are unable to walk due to the large crowd.
“Why does the Army uses public road as a waiting area for candidates? The same Army does not allow public to pass through its areas,” another resident pointed out.
At night, the candidates use verandah of guest houses and shops, besides residential areas for rest while in the morning, in the absence of any urinal facilities for the candidates, they use parts of Bishnupur locality as open toilets.
