JOWAI: A man, identified as Thianghun Biam of Mihmyntdu village in Jaintia Hills, attempted to kill his wife by hitting her on the neck with a machete (Khasi dao) on Thursday.
The incident happened in their house around 3pm. Biam then locked himself up in the house and threatened villagers that he would “slit their throats” if anyone entered the house. Villagers said he was holding a knife and a stone for sharpening.
Biam’s wife Dom Chyrmang suffered a deep cut and was taken to Civil Hospital and later shifted to NEIGRIHMS in Shillong, the villagers said.
A crowd gathered outside the house on Thursday afternoon and police were informed.
The police broke the main door and arrested the accused. The machete was also seized.
A source also claimed that Biam is mentally deranged and was under medication a few years ago at Sanker Rehab Centre in Shillong.
