Guwahati:  Former Assam chief minister and Congress veteran Tarun Gogoi on Monday demanded that the investigation into the murder of All Bodoland Minority Students’ Union (ABMSU) leader, Lafiqul Islam, should be monitored by Gauhati High Court even if the investigation is taken up by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

A team of senior leaders of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) led by Tarun Gogoi, on Monday called on the family members of the slain students’ leader in Kokrajhar. The APCC team comprising other senior leaders including Pradyut Bardoloi, Rakibul Hussain, Rekibuddin Ahmed demanded a thorough investigation into the murder and monitoring of the same by the court.

The ABMSU leader as gunned down by unidentified assailants who came on a motorcycle and shot him dead from close range in broad daylight in Kokrajhar town on August 1 last.

The Kokrajhar police has so far arrested only one person, Antaz Ali who deals in cattle, in connection with the murder incident in the wake of media reports that Lafiqul had become a thorn in the flesh of a thriving cattle smuggling racket that operates from Kokrajhar area in connivance with a section of police and district administration officials.

Several organisations have termed it political murder in view of the growing clout of Lafiqul Islam among the non-Bodo communities in Bodoland Territorial Autonomous District Council (BTC) areas. The Independent Look Sabha MP from Kokrajhar, Naba Kumar Sarania has termed it a political murder as Lafiqul has emerged as a strong leader among the non-Bodo communities including Muslims.
