SHILLONG: As many as 252263 LEDs have been distributed in the state under the UJALA scheme of the Union Government. The National UJALA Dashboard says that 32761 mw energy is being saved in the state in a year with the distribution of LEDs. The dashboard also states that the state is saving Rs 13 crore per year in respect of energy savings because of used of LEDs. The Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All (UJALA) scheme aimed at saving precious energy was launched in the state last year. Under the scheme 2-10 LED bulbs, each priced at Rs 90, is beinh given to every household. The beneficiaries have to produce their electricity bills before purchasing the bulbs. It may be mentioned that the scheme is being implemented by Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a joint venture of PSUs under the Ministry of Power and aims to promote efficient lighting, enhance awareness on using efficient equipment which reduce electricity bills and help preserve environment. The scheme aims to cover 3.5 lakh households in the State and the EESL would soon open outlets in the state.
