SHILLONG: Police have begun investigation into the alleged harassment of a woman by South Shillong legislator Sanbor Shullai.
Police on Tuesday visited the guest house at Bishnupur run by Haviva Passah who was allegedly assaulted by the legislator though a counter FIR was filed by him.
Ironically, Shullai’s counter FIR was first registered by the police though they had received a verbal complaint and a subsequent FIR from the lady first.
Passah filed the FIR at 12.30 pm on August 5, a day after the assault, while Shullai had lodged the complaint at 2 pm on the same day.
Earlier on August 4, at 7.30 pm, Passah was also taken for medical examination.
Sources said MDC Ricky Shullai had on the same day requested the lady not to file the FIR.
The case filed by Shullai was registered as Laban PS case no. 77(8) 2017 under Section 448 of the IPC (house trespass) whereas the case filed by Passah was registered as Laban PS case no. 78 (8) 2017 under Section 323 of the IPC (causing hurt) and Section 509 (act intended to insult the modesty of a woman). However, the police did not add any sections for breaking the locks and trespassing on the guest house of the lady by the legislator.
To a question on whether there is any laxity on the part of the police to follow up the case since it is involving a legislator, DGP S.B Singh said the police will investigate the case properly.
