HYC demands jobs for locals at NEHU
SHILLONG: Members of the education cell of the Hynniewtrep Youths’ Council (HYC) on Wednesday met the vice-chancellor of North Eastern Hills University (NEHU), SK Srivastava demanding preference to locals for jobs at the university. Speaking to reporters, HYC education secretary Roykupar Synrem said the VC has assured the organization to look into the matter and give preference to locals as per the qualifications. Synrem said none of the locals were absorbed in the vacant posts of professor, associate professor, assistant professor that were advertised in 2016. The VC has however informed that the posts would be re-advertised. The organization also urged the VC to give preference to students of the state before granting admission to other students from Assam, Manipur and Nagaland.

Driver, conductor arrested for assailant
SHILLONG: A driver and a conductor of Government owned SPTS bus were arrested after the duo assaulted the headman of Laitumkhrah. The incident took place on Thursday around 10.30 am, when Michael Pyngrope (32) and Kenny Paul Hynniewta (26), the driver and conductor of one SPTS bus (ML-01-7371), assaulted Gordon S Bruce, Headman of Laitumkhrah at Golf Link, police said.Police has also seized the bus and the matter is under investigation.

Teachers seek release of pending dues
TURA: Teachers working under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan schools in Garo Hills have demanded the release of their long standing monthly salaries and arrears and state that necessary funds are available with the state government.The All Garo Hills SSA Teachers’ Association has informed that they have not been paid their monthly salaries for the last three months and arrears are overdue for eight long months.“We are aware that funds for payment of salaries and arrears for the SSA teachers are sufficiently available with the state civil account. Why the delay in transferring the funds to the education department?” questioned the AGHSSATA in a statement. According to the association, SSA salaries for the months of May, June and July are yet to be released and eight months arrears are due since last year.

Meeting to chalk out road safety measures
TURA: In compliance with the Supreme Court order on road safety in the town area, a review meeting to chalk out follow up action on the same was held on Wednesday at the West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner’ Office in Tura.During the meeting, Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC), S B Marak, who chaired the meeting, informed that plans and programmes to promote road safety and security to the pedestrians and commuters need to be reviewed every now and then for the welfare of the people of the town. Lamenting on the fact that one way traffic routes could not be implemented to ease traffic congestion in the town, she hoped that better proposals might come in place for proper traffic regulation in future. Executive Engineer of PWD NEC Division, C N Sangma suggested that there should be No-Stopping zones at several busy junctions in and around the town in order to ease traffic congestion in the town. A proposal was also made to conduct awareness programs relating to road safety for school children and all commercial drivers in the district which can be organized jointly by the Traffic in charge, District Transport office, District Administration and District School and Education officer.

‘Freedom Run’ to mark 70th I-Day celebrations
TURA: As part of the 70th Independence Day celebrations, a ‘Freedom Run’ will be organised on August 14, by the District Administration in collaboration with the West Garo Hills District Sports Office in Tura.District Sports Officer, Jasper P Marak informed that the run which will cover a distance of about five kilometers will start at 7 am from Chandmary Playground and finish at the same venue.
