SHILLONG: The central disciplinary committee of the Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) has slapped a show-cause notice on its vice president, James Ban Basaiawmoit, for publicly announcing his intention to contest the 2018 Assembly elections from the People’s Democratic Front (PDF).
Following an emergency meeting on August 12, the central disciplinary committee stated that Basaiawmoit violated the constitution of the regional party.
In a press statement, KHNAM stated that the party cannot prevent him from contesting elections from a different party but he did not inform the party of his intention as per laid down norms in the statute.
KHNAM said Basaiawmoit was irregular in party meetings. The committee has asked the leader to clarify on his statement as telecast on a local news channel.
Basaiawmoit had said, “As months and years passed, people have lost confidence in the party (KHNAM).”
The party said the statement would mislead the public.
“The committee wants to remind you that you had contested from the People’s Democratic Movement (PDM) and the Congress, but you did not reach your goal, it was only after you contested from KHNAM that you won the election,” the KHNAM statement said.
“After that you left KHNAM for UDP, but again you came back to KHNAM to contest the election in 2014 and the people of Mawkhar-Pynthorumkhrah constituency took you to victory,” it added.
