Independence Day celebrated across Garo Hills with fanfare

TURA: The Country’s 71st Independence Day was celebrated all across Garo Hills on Tuesday where various state and district leaders took the Rashtriya Salute from different parade contingents at their respective celebration venues.

Speakers at different venues highlighted the various achievements of the state government and the schemes that were implemented in the state.

In Tura, Meghalaya’s Minister for School Education and Literacy, Deborah Marak unfurled the National Flag at Dikki-Bandi Stadium in Dakopgre and took the Rashtriya Salute of 43 Parade contingents comprising of Meghalaya Police, 2nd MLP Battalion, National Cadet Corps, Boy Scouts, Girl Guides, Bulbul Pack, Cub Pack and school students.

West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Pravin Bakshi, DIG Western Range, Mukesh Singh, Superintendent of Police, West Garo Hills, M G Raghavendra Kumar, newly elected CEM of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), Boston Marak and other district officials attended the function at Tura.

In Ampati, Minister for Home (Police), H D R Lyngdoh took the salute from 30 parade contingents before a gathering of over 5000 people at Ampati Students’ Field.

The final match of Monsoon Soccer Challenge, 2017, organized by Ampati Youth Welfare Club, was also played in the afternoon where Chief Minister Dr. Mukul Sangma participated as the chief guest.

While Chairman of the State Planning Board, Salseng C Marak unfurled the National Flag at Resubelpara Mini Stadium, it was Forest and Environment Minister, Clement Marak who did the honours for Williamnagar in a function held at Rongrenggre Higher Secondary School Playground.

At Baghmara in South Garo HIlls, PHE Minister, Dr Celestine Lyngdoh unfurled the National Flag at District Sports Complex Baghmara while at Dadenggre Civil Sub-Division, Sports and Youth Affairs Minister, Zenith M Sangma unfurled the Tricolor.

Raksamgre Civil Sub-Division and Chokpot Civil Sub-Division also celebrated the occasion where Parliamentary Secretary, Limison Sangma and local MLA, Bluebell R Sangma were the chief guests respectively.

This years’ Independence Day celebration was marked by organization of various sports events and competitions for students and the youth in general. Winners of such events were handed over prizes and certificates by the Chief Guest concerned at different celebration venues.
