SHILLONG: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma has termed the situation in the state as “by and large peaceful” and that the security scenario has improved with the launch of operations against militant groups by the security forces.
Addressing the official function to celebrate Independence Day at Polo on Tuesday, Sangma however said the matter relating to construction of railway track between Tetelia and Byrnihat was objected by some NGOs, which had affected the law and order situation, especially in Ri Bhoi district.
“The government has taken all necessary steps to tackle the situation and maintain law and order at any cost,” Sangma said while adding that the overall internal security scenario in the state has improved with the launch of successful counter insurgency operations by the state police and central paramilitary forces.
He said the anti national elements have suffered serious setbacks leading to large scale arrests, surrender of militants as well as recovery of a huge cache of arms and ammunition and attempts to float a new militant outfit by some misguided youth were foiled in successful operations by the police.
According to Sangma, trained bomb disposal and police dog squads have been deployed in the Garo Hills region and they have provided valuable service in containing militancy.
“The state police are keeping a close watch on trans-border movement of terrorists from the neighbouring country and have taken up the issue with the government of India. In the eastern region, the activities of all anti-national organisations have been effectively contained by the state police,” he said.
