TURA: Villagers of Duguripara Village under Ampati in South West Garo Hills have urged the Deputy Commissioner to take action against the Village Employment Council (VEC) Secretary for allegedly drawing job card payment money against the names of people who have already expired while denying jobs to those who are entitled to the same.

The illegal practice of the VEC Secretary was brought to light after an RTI was filed by one, Bellu Miah of the same village where it was found that the secretary had been drawing amounts meant as wages for Sobia Bewa, who has been dead for ten years and another Muslima Bewa, who expired about three years ago.

According to the findings under the  RTI , the secretary is also drawing payment against one, Motiar Rahman Kazi who is neither a resident in the village nor worked for a single day under the scheme.

What is even more shocking is that two persons – Safiel Shek and Abdul Quyam, both of whom have valid job cards are being denied jobs although payments against their names are being drawn without their knowledge.

In their complaint which has been submitted to the Deputy Commissioner the villagers have urged the official to initiate an inquiry into the matter and to take strong action against the secretary if found guilty.
