SHILLONG: Meghalaya government is yet to issue any instruction to the Meghalaya Public Service Commission (MPSC) to raise the upper age limit of candidates aspiring to appear in Meghalaya Civil Service (MC) examinations.

The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM), state youth wing (SYW) met the Chairman of the MPSC to inquire if the state government has notified to increase the upper age limits from 32 to 40 years for local youth who wish to appear for Meghalaya Civil Service (MCS) Examinations.

The MPSC has advertised the MCS examination with the last date for submission of application as August 31 with the upper age limit being 27 years plus 5 years’ relaxation for SC/ST (upto 32 years).

In a press statement, the KHNAM stated that the Chairman of the MPSC informed the delegation of the KHNAM SYW that no information or direction had been received from the state government on the matter to amend the advertisement by increasing the upper age limits for local youth.

“The Chairman has informed that if the government gives a direction the MPSC would do the necessary amendment and could also extend the last date,” the statement added.

Having recently met the Chief Secretary, Y. Tsering over the matter, the KHNAM stated that they would meet him again on Tuesday to push the demand for consideration of upper age limit.

“Even the central civil service examination has given 37 years as an upper age limits, therefore, 32 years of upper age limits is too less,” it stated.

“Considering the inauguration of Administrative Block and new C&RD Block by Chief Minister it becomes more pertinent that youth be given more opportunities to become Civil Service Officers and provide services to the people through these offices,” the statement added.

The KHNAM youth wing pointed out that the upper age limit in Assam is 38 years and the relaxation is upto 43 years, the upper age limit in Manipur is 30 years with relaxation upto 40 years, while in Tripura, the upper age limit is 40 years with a relaxation up to 45 years.

In Mizoram, the upper age limit is 35 years with a relaxation up to of 40 years. In Meghalaya, the upper age limit is 27 years and relaxation is upto 32 years.

The KHNAM, youth went on to state that in the Meghalaya Service Rules 1975 section 9 Para (ii) says “Provided that the upper age limit may be relaxed in respect of candidates belonging to special categories in accordance with any general or special order issued by the Government from time to time.”
