TURA: The absence of power supply to two remote villages in South Garo Hills has irked the Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) which has alleged negligence by the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) as the reason for the situation.
According to the Federation, the remote villages of Rajarongat and Daji Teksragre both of which draw power from the Barengapara MeECL Sub Station have been without power for over ten years now. Barengapara MeECL Sub Station is located near Dalu in West Garo Hills.
What has irked the federation is the fact that the concerned authority has done nothing to rectify the problem even after such a long time.
“Why has the MeECL neglected these two villages for such a long time? If connection is already there, why can’t the MeECL provide power? People from these villages are suffering and there are school going children whose studies are being affected due the unavailability of power,” the federation lamented.
The federation proposed that if the Barengapara MeECL Sub Station is unable to provide power to these two villages, a new connection should be provided from the Chokpot MeECL Sub Station.
Such is the power scenario in many remote villages of Garo Hills. Villages which once enjoyed power have been left in the dark by the MeECL on many occasions. There have been many cases where transformers which once supplied power to villages have been left abandoned once it develops faults never to be restored. Repeated complaints by villagers have failed to make a difference and the people have been forced to live with the problem.
