TURA: The seventh session of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) will start from August 28 during which election for the post of chairman will be held.
The date of election is August 30, the last day of the session. The post fell vacant after Boston Marak resigned and assumed the seat of Chief Executive Member to head a Congress-led executive committee alliance.
There is speculation that Dengnakpara MDC Sadhiarani M Sangma, wife of Congress minister Zenith Sangma, will be fielded by the ruling Congress for the chairman’s post.
NPP sources have revealed that the party will “in all probability” contest the election but the opposition is yet to project its candidate.
The first day of the three-day session will have a question hour followed by tabling of motions and passing of resolutions.
CEM Boston Marak, who also holds the finance portfolio, will table the report of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India for the year ending 2010-11.
Another highlight of the session is the presentation of the Codification of the Garo Customary Laws by Executive Member Jogonsing D Sangma which will be followed up with a discussion on the same in the next two days.
The codification issue had generated much controversy after it was tabled and put to vote by the then NPP-led Executive Committee in March this year. Cutting across party lines, as many as 18 MDCs from the 29 elected representatives voted in favour of the bill.
