SHILLONG: A proposal has been sent to the Centre for aerial manning of two border outposts in West Jaintia Hills.
BSF IG in Meghalaya P.K. Dubey said since Hingaria and Huroi border outposts in Jaintia Hills are inaccessible by land, a proposal was sent to the Home Ministry for providing assistance for aerial manning.
“We are looking at aerial assistance to the personnel posted in these BOPs by helicopters which can provide ration and other materials as airdropping of essential things save time,” Dubey said.
According to the BSF official, providing logistics to BSF personnel at remote BOPs is a tough task.
On border fencing is concerned, the BSF official said 90-km border is yet to be fenced and it will have to be carried out in four phases. Dubey said Rs 118 crore will be provided by the Centre as land compensation to the border residents to carry out fencing.
Multi-skill devp centres
The BSF is also looking at setting up Multi-skill Development Centres in border areas to help residents, especially the youth, engage themselves in learning various skills like driving, plumbing, electrical works, besides stitching and weaving by women.
The aim is to wean away the border residents from committing crime. “The borders are crime prone and we want to concentrate on constructive activities,” Dubey said.
