TURA: The Garo Hills State Movement Committee (GHSMC) has proposed that the Mahatma Gandhi University (MGU) at Matchakolgre in Tura is made the main permanent campus in Meghalaya.
In its memorandum submitted to Chief Minister, Dr Mukul Sangma the committee sought the up-gradation of the campus as it is currently in a sorry state and lacking in basic infrastructure.
“The university does not have full-fledged head apart from a Vice Chancellor or Deputy Registrar. It also does not have library facilities and the salary of the teaching and non-teaching staff are meager and not in accordance with their posts,” the committee said.
Stating that the MGU Campus at Khanapara in Ri-Bhoi District which has been acting as the main campus is not feasible and depriving the youths of the Garo Hills of their potential employment, the GHSMC urged Dr Sangma to intervene in the matter so that the campus in Tura can function as the main permanent campus of the university.
“We have learnt from reliable sources that the campus in Tura is actually the main campus. As per our enquiry, we have learnt that all important letters, notices, advertisements and other queries by UGC students has to be addressed to the Vice Chancellor in Tura. Therefore, it is only reasonable that the Tura campus functions as the main and permanent campus of MGU,” the committee added.
