SHILLONG: Just when the city was taking heart from the improved law and order after a series of arson cases, a petrol bomb attack at Upper Mawprem early on Saturday reminded citizens that it was not over.
Miscreants targeted the residence of Joydeep Sharma, who is the president of UDP’s youth wing in West Shillong constituency, at 2.30am on Saturday, police said.
However, no damage either to property or individual was reported. East Khasi Hills SP Davis Marak said police saw two angles in the fresh incident of petrol bomb attack.
The attack comes four days after eight KSU members, who were held in connection with the arson in the city over two months ago, were released on bail.
The SP said Saturday’s incident might be the handiwork of some of the arsonists who were released on bail or there might be a political rivalry behind the incident.
Upper Mawprem falls under West Shillong constituency where the stage is set for a direct fight between United Democratic Party (UDP) candidate Paul Lyngdoh and Congress’ Mohendro Rapsang.
Condemning the incident, local MLA Paul Lyngdoh said he suspected involvement of opponents’ supporters in the incident.
“It’s highly condemnable and we don’t practice this kind of politics in Meghalaya,” Lyngdoh said.
He also said he has not come across such low level of political behaviour in his career.
