2 Independent MLAs in Meghalaya to join BJP snapping ties with ruling Congress

SHILLONG: Two Independent MLAs from Meghalaya, Justine Dkhar and Robinus Syngkon who have been supporting the Congress-led Meghalaya United Alliance (MUA) government headed by chief minister Mukul Sangma, are set to join the BJP.

The two Independent MLAs on Monday met the BJP president Amit Shah in New Delhi along with the state BJP president Shibun Lyngdoh and convenor of the BJP-backed North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) and senior BJP leader from Assam Himanta Bishwa Sarma.

Shibun Lyngdoh informed that both the Independent MLAs would soon join the BJP formally in a function to be organized in Shillong.

Justine Dkhar represents Khlehriat Assembly constituency while Robinus Syngkon represents Mowkaiaw constituency.

As on date, the ruling Meghalaya United Alliance (MUA)  has 44 members including  30 MLAs from Congress, two from Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) , 11 Independents and one MLA of  of the North East Socialist Democratic Party (NESDP). Once these two Independent MLAs snaps ties with the MUA its strength will be reduced to 42 , still a comfortable figure in a 60-member House.
