SHILLONG: Following the call centre scam in the city, the Special Investigation Team formed by Meghalaya police on Wednesday carried out raids in Guwahati and seized 84 CPUs which were used by scamsters to dupe American citizens.
SP (City) Vivek Syiem told reporters that SIT recovered the CPUs from M/s BPO Zurich in Guwahati. The BPO was using the infrastructure of Aspirant Enterprises on rent.
Earlier, nine persons, who acted as Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Agents to dupe money from American citizens, were arrested since Monday evening from Shillong.
All the nine accused are in police custody for six days.
The police had busted three call centres, M/s IFA Enterprise run by Amit Bhowmick and Sunny Mukherjee at three rented floors of the building of S.S. NetCom at Cleve Colony, M/s BPO Zurich operating also at Cleve Colony run by Rijo Christian Joseph and Sweety Sutnga and another call centre, M/s Dasanbha Enterprise owned by Nicky War of Jaiaw.
Except Mukherjee, all the others were arrested.
While 85 computers and 77 hard discs were seized from IFA Enterprise, 63 computers were seized from Dasanbha Enterprise which had employed 15 persons.
All the computers were sent to Hyderabad for forensic evidence.
Earlier on Tuesday, the statement of the City SP that M/s BPO Zurich was operating from the Reserve Bank premises prompted RBI to give a clarification on Wednesday that it had nothing to do with the arrested persons or their activities.Similarly, after the arrest of two S.S. NetCom employees, Christopher Kurbah and Kiren Damai, in connection with the case, a member of the legal team of SSNet.Com said on Wednesday that it has nothing to do with the scam as S.S. NetCom had already closed down its BPO operations with Aircel, Vodafone and Idea in 2014-15.
“Only the infrastructure facilities were rented out after police verification and NOC from the headman to private parties with whom we have no connections,” the member said.
According to the legal team of S.S. NetCom, Christopher and Kiren had helped only in providing manpower to IFA Enterprise which had sought help from them.
Police said all angles will be probed though they are yet to take any statement from S.S. NetCom higher-ups.
