Kharshiing feels need for hospital in Smit

SHILLONG: Smit should get a separate hospital to cater to the needs of the people of Mawryngkneng and Nongkrem, John F Kharshiing, co-chairman of the Planning Board, has said.
The meeting, between the Meghalaya State Planning Board Working Group-III and the officers of Department of Health & Family Welfare on health, ASHA, Aganwadi at Smit PHC on Wednesday, discussed schemes of the National Health Mission and its benefits. He also urged traditional heads to allot a portion of land for a hospital and take the matter to the government.
In East Khasi Hills district, which has a total population of 9,29,131, around 69.40 per cent take part in the immunisation programme, 42 mothers out of 1 lakh die from child birth, 32 out of 1000 babies die after birth and rate of hospital deliveries is only 78 per cent.
