A district Administration official informed that the branch of the tree was too weak and it might fall down anytime on the power lines beneath it. As a preventive measure, the whole traffic in the area was diverted and power supply was cut off in the area.

District Magistrates, personnel from the Forest department and other line department are camping in the area.

The matter of chopping down the weak trees in the city is pending before the High Court and the authorities when last contacted were waiting for an order in this regard from the High Court of Meghalaya.

Last month, three people were killed when a massive tree fell down on a cab near the Raj Bhawan and following the incident, Forest department had identified as many as 500 weak trees in the city which were to be either cut or trimmed.

A PIL was filed by city-based lawyer Kaustav Paul against rampant cutting of trees prompting the High Court to order the government to stop further felling of trees in the city.
