SHILLONG: The Meghalaya government has asserted that it would move the Supreme Court, if necessary, in the case of students from the state not being allocated seats in medical colleges in Assam.
Additional chief secretary, in-charge of health and family welfare, PW Ingty said the government was looking into the matter carefully.
He said the problem arose after the Assam government abruptly changed its rules for allocation of seats and made it clear that it was not giving any seats to students from Meghalaya.
The Meghalaya government has taken up the matter with its Assam counterparts and the neighbouring state has been requested to accommodate the students.
“They said they will try to accommodate our students,” Ingty added.
The statement of the Meghalaya government assumes significance as the students who are state nominees through NEC quota and selected by the under secretary, health and family welfare department have been denied admission by Assam medical colleges.
BJP leader KC Boro blamed Chief Minister Mukul Sangma for the impasse over allotment of medical seats for Meghalaya students in Assam.
Boro said he met Ingty and stressed on the need to appeal before the Supreme Court so that the students are not affected in their academic career.
