SHILLONG/TURA/AMPATI: A special programme was organised at the district auditorium to honour teachers on the occasion of Teachers’ Day. The event was led by Chief Information Commissioner and former Meghalaya Chief Secretary, P B O Warjri.
During the programme, Warjri spoke highly on the role of teachers and compared them to gardeners who “render selfless service with dedication and take proper care of their students and help them grow into wonderful human beings who contribute to the welfare of the society”. She further added that success of a student is the biggest award for any teacher.
Another speaker was Pravin Bakshi, Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills. Bakshi also spoke on the importance of the role that teachers play in shaping the future of their students. He also added that we should respect them as a sign of our gratitude for their dedication.
The National Foundation for Teachers’ Welfare in the district presented awards to a number of teachers in recognition of their dedicated service.
Teachers who had served a generation of students and gone into retirement were also not forgotten on the special day.
Awards for teachers, students
Three school teachers of South West Garo Hills were conferred with the District Awards during the Teachers’ Day celebration on Monday. The celebration was organised jointly by the District School Education Office and teachers of the district.
The recipients of the district awards were, Rushwaldam, Asstt Teacher of Ampati Govt. Higher Secondary School, Saindrick R. Marak, Asstt. Teacher of Nogorpara Govt. U.P. School and Rasang R. Marak, Head of Bangkapara Govt. L.P.School. Samson M. Marak, Scout Master of Nogorpara Sec. School, and Julie A. Sangma, Guide Captain of Boldamgre U.P. School, were honoured as best Scout Master and best Guide Captain of the district, respectively.
Mahendraganj MLA Dikkanchi D. Shira was among the guests.
In Amlarem, a programme was organised by the office of the Sub-Divisional School Education Officer Amlarem Civil Sub-Division at Enowel Hall Amlarem. L. Sumer, MDC, graced the occassion as the Chief Guest.
Another programme was held in the District Library, Auditorium, Jowai, where Parliamentary Secretary Robinus Syngkon attended the occasion as the Chief Guest and Additional Deputy Commissioner DM Wallang as the guest of honour.
Speaking on the occasion, Syngkon expressed his gratitude to all teachers who have shaped and moulded him for who he is today. He also handed awards to various awardees from schools in the district.
In Nongpoh, a programme was organised by the office of the District School Education Officer, Nongpoh at St. Paul’s Higher Secondary School, Nongpoh wherein C. P Gotmare, DC, Ri-Bhoi district was the chief guest.
In his speech, Gotmare pointed out the importance of celebrating Teachers’ Day stated that the lack of wisdom still persists and that we should understand the importance of learning. He further encouraged teachers to always impart positive value, practical education to students.
Awards were also handed to various teachers in honour of their dedication.
SPARK celebrates
The less fortunate and underprivileged children were not left behind in the celebrations on Teachers’ Day. The members of SPARK, a local NGO, organised a special programme at KJP Assembly Hall to provide a platform to these target children to show their admiration and gratitude towards their teachers. The event was also organised in celebration of the team’s recent achievement.
 The programme was made more special by providing a platform to the parents of these children honouring them as the first and immediate teachers of their children to guide them towards a better life.
