TURA: Danakgre A’king Nokma, Enila Ch Marak has accused the Garo Hills Autonomous Council (GHADC) of grabbing parts of land belonging to the A’king and transforming them into ‘Khas Mahals’ without the knowledge and consent of the concerned Nokma functioning at the time.

Questioning the authenticity of the map recently submitted to the Deputy Commissioner by the Chambugong Mahari Association, Marak claimed that as per the original map prepared under the British Government, areas that fall under Danakgre A’king included Tura Peak Rongnokma in the East, Damalgre A’king in the West, Me’gonggre A’king in the North and Sangsanggre A’king up to the Sangsang stream in the South.

Enila further stated that later, some parts of the Danakgre A’king including Tura Peak Rongnokma in the East to Araimile-Gonggadamal stream and Gandrak Stream at Chandmary in the North to Sangsang Stream in Dobasipara were transformed into Khas mahal or Mauza X-1 by the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) without the knowledge or consent of the then A’king Nokma.

“When were these areas turned into Khas Mahal or Mauza X-1? We have looked for records of any agreements signed with the A’king Nokma and found that there was none. Since there are no records available which shows that the A’king Nokma’s consent was taken, the said areas still belong to the Danakgre A’king,” Enila said adding, other than her there are no other A’king Nokmas.

According to Enila, Tura Town and forest reserves were created from within the A’king but there is no question of dividing the A’king.

Meanwhile, the Nokma also said that since Danakgre A’king which was transferred to South West Garo Hills District has been brought back under Rongram in West Garo Hills, she would resume the signing of documents of the general public in matters relating to the A’king.
