Umden villagers demand hospital, jobs

SHILLONG: The Umden Airport Development and Transport Association has placed before the state government various demands related to the Umroi airport in Ri-Bhoi district, including early construction of a hospital at Umden and employment of local youths.
The Airport Authority of India’s plan to construct the hospital near the airport is a part of its corporate social responsibility.
However, the project is yet to take off.
Addressing reporters on Tuesday, the association’s president Apborlang Nongrum said they have met the Airport Authority of India director over the issue of employment of local people in grade IV.
Currently, he said, there were four local people working on a contractual basis.
The association further urged the state government and airport authorities to find another route to construct the road as the fencing of the airport will close the road to Umden village.
