SHILLONG: Eviction notice to 494 residents of Rongkachiring area, West Garo Hills was recently issued by the Deputy Commissioner. While the residents alleged that the notice was served when the matter is still pending in the Court. However, the DC stated this is a complete misinformation on the matter.
DC Pravin Bakshi said that the High Court on July 6, had passed an order into the matter and the Nokmas had one month to file a review petition.
According to Bakshi, more than one month had passed after the passing of the order and the District Administration referred the matter to the Law department. The department then informed the District Administration that there is no restraining order and eviction can be carried out.
He also said that some self styled nokmas are acting as village head, which is a contempt of the court. The eviction drive is scheduled to be carried out on September 18.
The District Administration on Wednesday, however, had a meeting with the residents and the Administration opined that the residents of the area can be accommodated in Government’s low cost housing unit project since around100 units are ready.
“They told us that they would get back to us after discussing the matter,” Bakshi said.
The entire controversy pertains to the land which is required for the upgradation of the Tura Civil Hospital from 200 to 300 bedded hospital. Bakshi also said that the land belongs to the Tura Civil Hospital and they have the land pattas.
