USTM holds orientation programme
SHILLONG: The University of Science & Technology Meghalaya (USTM) organised an orientation programme for new undergraduate and post graduate students on Wednesday. The programme was graced by Guatam Biswas, Director, IIT Guwahati, as chief guest and, NC Talukdar, Director IASST, along with N K Choudhury, Former Vice Chancellor, Gauhati University, Principal Advisor ERDF, Mahbubul Hoque , Chancellor, USTM and ProVice Chancellor Dr R K Sharma.

RTI awareness programme held
TURA: An awareness programme on RTI was held at DRDA here on Wednesday. Chief Information Commissioner of Meghalaya PBO Warjri emphasised on the importance, function and implementation of the Right to Information (RTI) Act adding that a citizen has the right to seek information from a public authority.He stated that the basic objective of RTI is to empower citizens, promote transparency and accountability in the working of the government as a democracy. Warjri also mentioned about the exemptions and disclosure under Sections 8 and 9 and Schedule II of the RTI Act. Additional Deputy Commissioner AVD Shira presented the working status of the RTI cell since its inception in the district stating that 72 applications have been received so far. She also informed that about 47 RTI applications have been disposed of till date.

National Nutrition Week observed
TURA: National Nutrition Week under the theme ‘Optimal infant and child feeding practices: Better child health’ was kicked off on September 1 by the Department of Food Science & Nutrition, College of Home Science at its campus in Sangsangre near Tura. The basic objective of the celebration is to intensify awareness generation on the importance of nutrition for health which has an impact on development, productivity, economic growth and ultimate national development.
As part of the celebration, a demonstration programme on ‘low cost weaning foods and snacks for young children’ was conducted by the Nutrition students at the Tura Super Market on September 4. A similar programme for the young mothers and primary care givers of Chunmati locality in Tura will be held on Thursday as part of its concluding programme.
Earlier, poster making competition and cooking competition (Low cost nutritious snacks for children) was also organised on the inaugural day.
