SHILLONG: The United Democratic Party (UDP) on Thursday announced the list of 28 candidates who would be contesting the Assembly Elections, 2018.
According to the list of candidates announced, all the sitting MLAs of the party will be contesting elections from their respective constituencies. The party president and Opposition leader, Donkupar Roy will contest from Shylla constituency while the former president of the pressure group Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FDKJGP), Joe Marwein would contest the election from North Shillong.
Party’s veteran leader, Bindo M Lanong who lost the 2013 Assembly polls to Congress’s Ampareen Lyngdoh, would once again try his luck from East Shillong constituency. Sitting MLAs including Paul Lyngdoh, Jemino Mawthohm Embhah Syiemlieh, Metbah Lyngdoh and T Chyne would also contest election from their respective constituencies
It may be mentioned that the party has also forged an alliance with Hills State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP)
When asked about the discontentment among the party ranks following forging of the pre-poll alliance with the HSPDP, party’s working president, Bindo Lanong said that people couldn’t get complete satisfaction in anything but added that most of the people in the party including the women’s wing have welcomed the alliance.
When asked about the party’s Chief Ministerial candidate, Party president Donkupar Roy said that the matter would be discussed later if the party won the elections.
