SHILLONG: The Dorbar Shnong Urkaliar in East Khasi Hills district has set December 31 as the deadline for bootleggers to find other means of livelihood.
The move came after the Dorbar Shnong observed that bootlegging, an illegal business of transporting (smuggling) alcoholic beverages, created a bad image to the society.
The local heads have petitioned East Khasi Hills deputy commissioner PS Dkhar on matters relating to bootlegging in Urkaliar locality. A meeting was held by the Dorbar on Saturday in which landowners had taken a unanimous decision to stop bootlegging once and for all.
The Dorbar Shnong further cautioned bootleggers not to operate their business during school hours, and on Sundays, since St. Jerome Church, Nongmynsong was located nearby.
