Demand for removal of weighbridges
SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Peoples’ United Front (MPUF) has expressed concern over rampant installation of weighbridges by the state government in Jaintia Hills. They added that the government should remove the weighbridge located at 7-mer, West Jaintia Hills and Umtyra at East Jaintia Hills. The organisation stated that it has caused difficulties to the truck drivers.
FKJGP meet for sub health centre
SHILLONG: The FKJGP Saisiej Unit, East Khasi Hills on Saturday held a meeting with the residents of villages from Mawlong, Saisiej, Mawkynring, Lumkseh, Lumdiengsai, Ummir, who want the establishment of Sub Health Centre in the region as they have to go to PHC Diengpasoh. The setting up of a health center will encourage people to go for Polio immunisation.
SOS organises 5-day programme
SHILLONG: A five-day programme was organised by the SOS Children’s Village here today, for the “Counsellors and Social Workers” of Child Care Institutions, in strengthening children’s homes. The programme, which was organised in collaboration with Women and Child Welfare Department and State Child Protection Society (SCPCS), was formally inaugurated by T. Dkhar, Commissioner and Secretary, Women and Child Welfare Department, Anuja Bansal, Secretary General, SOS India and S. Rynga, Joint Director, Women and Child Welfare. The programme is intended to provide training to the participants on positive youth development, resilience building, safeguarding children, individual care, among others. The resource person for the programme are Nandita Babu, Head Psychology Department, Delhi University, Shilpa Gupta, Professional Trainer of Common Sense Parenting, Archina Dhar, Child safeguarding, Sumanta Kar, Resilience Building and Shailesh Singh, Individual Care Plan.
Advocacy workshop for Red Cross Society
SHILLONG: The Governor of Meghalaya, Banwarilal Purohit, has called for active participation of the youth in various fields related to the activities of the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) at a workshop hosted by Raj Bhavan here on Monday. The chief guest emphasised that the strength of the Society lies with the volunteers and there is a need to motivate the youth to join Red Cross and for the Society to enrol members from schools and colleges in the state as well as to “inculcate the Red Cross spirit” in them. Among others who spoke on the occasion were the Chairman, Indian Red Cross Society, Meghalaya Branch, W R Marbaniang and V Singh, Director Blood Bank in charge of IRCS Youth Programme, New Delhi.
Peace building workshop held
TURA: A one-day peace building workshop using Peace Counts on Tour Modules was conducted jointly by Harding Theological College and Mason Phillips Academy at the former’s campus for students of Theology and Social Work recently. The workshop which had Elizabeth Sangma, guest faculty MPA and Mhonyamo Lotha (Peace Counts, Wokha) as facilitators was inaugurated by Vice Chancellor of Capt Williamson Technical University, Tura, R D Shira. Altogether 34 students participated in the seminar which included modules like Vision of Peace, Conflict Escalation De-Escalation, Paths into violence, Paths out of Violence, Street Football for Tolerance and How to be Peace builders.
Nongstoin BJP garners support for Kharbani
NONGSTOIN: Sixty-eight members of the polling booth committee of the BJP in Nongstoin Assembly constituency have written a petition to the state BJP in support of Arphul Kharbani, a party ticket aspirant from the constituency. A general meeting was organised at the BJP office here on Monday where all the delegates from different polling booths signed the petition to support Kharbani, the president of the BJYM Nongstoin Mandal, to be the party’s candidate for Nongstoin Assembly constituency. The meeting was attended by the president and secretary of the polling booth committee. The BJP Nongstoin Mandal maintained that the support for Kharbani was not merely from the members only but it was according to what the people of the constituency wanted. Kharbani told reporters after the meeting that he was willing to fight it out against the HSPDP and the Congress in next year’s Assembly elections and that it was the right time for him to be a part of the political arena after the demise of Hoping Stone Lyngdoh. He also said there were rumours in regard to Dr H. Bani’s willingness to contest from BJP ticket but till date there was no sign of application for ticket. “But I am willing to work together with any BJP candidate who get the tickets,” Kharbani, who is a former president of the Hynniewtrep Achik National Movement (HANM), a pressure group, said.
