Assam govt provides laptops to over 15,700 meritorious students

GUWAHATI:  Assam government on Wednesday provided laptop computers along with free internet connection for two years to each of 15,624 students who have passed this year’s High School Leaving Certificate Examination securing at least 75 per cent marks in aggregate and to 80 other such students who have passed High Madrassa examination.

These meritorious students were provided with the laptop computers under Anando Ram Barooah Award instituted by Assam government to encourage meritorious students of the state. The award is instituted after one of the most celebrated litterateurs and a British-era civil servant from the state.

Addressing the award presentation ceremony here, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal called upon the students to exploit the information technology revolution and digital media to achieve excellence in their study. He also cautioned the students against burgeoning cyber-crimes all over the globe and called upon them to remain alert against the menace.

Sonowal pointed out that Prime Minister Narendra Modi looked upon the North East Region of the country as the engine of growth for the entire nation and called upon the students to strive to excel in their chosen field of study and profession so that the state can be in the driving seat while steering the country on the path of development.

Besides the laptop computers each of the awardees was provided with a 4G internet connection for two years along with online tutorial materials for joint entrance tests for medical and engineering courses. They were also provided with plus two level the syllabi for science, arts and commerce streams.

Assam’s education minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma informed that out of over 16,000 students who have passed Class 10 level final examination this year with star marks, about 11000 have taken admission into science stream in the plus two (higher secondary) level, 3000 in arts stream and 1700 in the commerce stream.

The minister informed that Assam government will provide a scooty or Rs 52,000 to each of 1000 girl students who have secured first division in higher secondary examination conducted by Assam Higher Secondary Council this year.  Next year 5000 such girl students will get the award.
