NONGPOH: The Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF) on Tuesday has threatened to stage a series of agitation if the state government did not initiate measures to check the alleged encroachment by the Assam government at Madan Umwang under Block-II in Ri Bhoi district.
The Assam Police had last month halted the construction of an eri silk building, which was sanctioned by the Meghalaya Sericulture department at Madan Umwang.
Unfortunately the project has not been started as the state government was yet to give permission to the village authorities to go ahead with the project.
Speaking to reporters, Marcus Marten, the president of the HNYF Northern Region said the federation would soon hold its executive committee meeting to decide on the nature of the agitation it would take in pressuring the state government to immediately solve the problems faced by the indigenous people residing in the border areas.
“We strongly condemn the state government and the district administration of Ri Bhoi for its adamant attitude towards the problems and difficulties faced by our people in the border areas,” Marten said.
The HNYF leader further rued that as per their information, no inspection has been done so far either by the state government or the district administration since the Assam Police stopped the ongoing construction of Eri Silk Building at Madan Umwang.
