SHILLONG: The multi-crore State Convention Centre, which was inaugurated around four years ago, is already showing signs of decay.
The roof of the building, inaugurated in 2013 in the Pinewood Hotel complex, is leaking in many places. The continuous leakage has affected parts of the walls too.
The Meghalaya Government Construction Company Limited had
undertaken the construction of the centre and later it was handed over to the Meghalaya Tourism Development Corporation, which is responsible for the upkeep of the building. When contacted, officials in the Tourism Department said there were “no major issues” with the building. “There may have been some construction defect but now the defects will be repaired after monsoon,” the officials said. The tendered cost of the project was Rs 15.47 crore with an earnest money deposit of Rs 30.94 lakh. But due to delay in the completion of the project, the construction cost escalated to Rs 23.21 crore.
The Convention Centre was partly funded by the Union Government under the Additional Central Assistance.
