SHILLONG: The Unitarian Church commemorated the 130th anniversary of Khasi Unitarian Church with a call to work for peace and for religious organisations to take a stand to minimize conflicts in the midst of critical social issues.
The occasion was celebrated at Unitarian Church at Madan Laban which was attended by hundreds of believers of the Unitarian Church on Monday.
The theme for the anniversary celebration is Brotherhood of man in the Fatherhood of God which advocated the responsibility to remain united as brothers and sisters as faithful believers.
Speaking as the Chief Guest on the occasion, Cabinet Minister M. Ampareen Lyngdoh said, “The Unitarian Church has given hope to the hopeless and for non-believers to believe that there is a God.”
“It is the love of God that helps us to do our duty to God, society and our country,” she added.
Lyngdoh asserted that it was one thing to institute faith and it was another thing to practice it which, she said, was a challenge.
Exhorting the Unitarian Church to grow in strength and numbers, she said, “These are troubled times and followers of the Church should go forward in their mission to bring the love of God to others.”
In the year 1887 in the Khasi-Jaintia Hills, the heart of Hajom Kissor Singh was stirred to form the Unitarian movement at Jowai with three companions.
