Assam govt to pay Rs 4 lakh ex-gratia against each of lives lost in boat tragedy

GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Sarbananad Sonowal on Tuesday directed the Deputy Commissioner of Goalpara district to immediately release ex-gratia amount of Rs 4 lakh each against each of ten persons who were killed in the boat tragedy at Sabang River at Joriabeel in Goalpara district on Sunday evening. Sonowal expressed grief over the loss of life in the tragic incident of boat capsizes.

About 50 people from the district in four small boats were returning home after witnessing a local boat race in Sabang river when their boats capsized during the storm at Joriabeel on Sunday evening. Ten persons, mostly children, reportedly drowned in the incident.

Sonowal also directed the Deputy Commissioner of Goalpara district to take all measures for safety of the boat passengers of the area.
