TURA: A 27-year-old driver of an earth clearance vehicle (JCB) was abducted from his company quarter by four armed men from Mellim, a village near Rangsakona constituency of West Garo Hills late Saturday night.
The unidentified men entered the camp site of a road construction company shortly after 11:30 pm on Saturday and kidnapped driver Robin Rabha, a resident of Damas in North Garo Hills.
West Garo Hills police chief Dr MGR Kumar said police were ascertaining whether the guns were genuine or dummies given that all four had weapons on them.
“We have some leads in the case and have identified some people. It appears to be the handiwork of local criminals. We are also trying to rescue the kidnapped driver,” the district SP said.
Referring to previous criminal incidents in the Mellim region, Kumar said there were many local gangs who had committed crimes in the guise of militants.
