Mawkyrwat: South West Khasi Hills police on Monay arrested a man for allegedly assaulting his wife who later died while she was taken to North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) in Shillong.
South West Khasi Hills superintendent of police H.G. Lyngdoh said the accused, Kynsai Lyngkhoi, assaulted his wife Repateng Mawlein in a rented house at Mawkyrwat market between 4 and 4.30pm on September 15.
Police had launched a search operation to trace the accused today after he was absconding.
Lyngdoh said during the interrogation the accused confessed that he assaulted her. “She was taken to the community health centre, Mawkyrwat for treatment. There she tried to protect her husband by informing the doctor that she had fell down and that it was an accident. Later, she was referred to NEIGRIHMS, Shillong for further treatment where she was declared brought dead by the medical and health officer without any suspicion of foul play as the relatives also had no idea about the incident,” Lyngdoh said.
Later, the relatives went to the magistrate seeking exemption from the post mortem but the latter did not accept their prayer and directed them to report at Nongmensong police outpost.
“The elder child of the deceased narrated the entire episode when he saw his step-father beating and kicking his mother which eventually led to her death,” Lyngdoh said, adding that after the boy revealed the truth, the accused fled.
After conducting the post-mortem examination, the body was handed over to the relatives for customary rites, Lyngdoh said. A case was registered under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code.
Sources informed that according to the post-mortem report, the woman had internal injuries.
“We launched a search operation to trace the accused and today we arrested him. He was remanded to three days police custody,” the police officer said.
