Woman jumps to death in Kynshi
NONGSTOIN: A woman committed suicide by jumping into the Kynshi around 7am on Monday, police said. The woman has been identified as Aipliebiang Nongsiej (27) of Tynrongwahladew, a village in West Khasi Hills.The Nongstoin police along with Fire and Emergency Services are carrying out a search in the river. However, the body is yet to be recovered with the strong current of the river water not helping the search team. Some witnesses said they saw the woman carrying clothes in her hands and jumping unclothed into the river. According to a statement by her relatives, the woman had a history of mental sickness.
Mawblei residents face
power woes
SHILLONG: Residents of Mawblei area had to spend almost the entire day without electricity and the reason for the prolonged power cut is still not known. People from the area called up The Shillong Times office around 9.30 pm to inform about the difficulty they faced without power supply. “It was hard to cook dinner in the darkness. Worse still, we have not been able to pump water. In fact, we basically could not do anything,” an irritated resident, said. Sources said that barring a brief period in the morning, the residents were without power supply since morning till late evening. Another resident was worried because with no power since morning, he could not charge his mobile phone and hence could not make contacts during the “emergency”. Phone calls to the MeECL Jingkieng office, under which the area falls, went unanswered.
Tura MDC takes up issue of town’s water woes
TURA: MDC for Tura GHADC Constituency, Rupert M Sangma along with development committees representing different localities recently paid a surprise visit to the PHE water treatment plant and the GHADC water distribution point following complaints of acute water shortage from residents of different localities of the town. Sangma alleged that during their inspection, it was found that pressure of water being released was low due to the absence of a water reservoir which was affecting distribution. “Due to the low pressure, water is not being distributed to all the localities. It was only after the valve was released for three more rounds that the water pressure increased to be strong enough for equal distribution,” Sangma said. The MDC assured that a request would be sent to the PHE department to increase the amount of water being released for the affected areas. He also informed that a letter has been issued to the PHE department by the Water Works Department of the GHADC to start the construction of the water tank near Tura Government College at the earliest.
FKJGP demands nurses at sub-health centre
SHILLONG: The FKJGP Mawryngkneng Circle met the District Medical and Health Officer (DMHO) on Tuesday with a request to allow nurses to stay in two of the Sub- Health Centre at villages of Kut and Nonghali to serve the people there. FKJGP claimed that nurses would visit the Health Center only once or twice in a week which has put the general public in difficulty.The DMHO has assured that the matter will be looked into.
Six Sordars oppose decision by Sordar Shnong to remove them
SHILLONG: The six Sordars of Krang villages in East Khasi Hills have opposed the decision of Synjuk Sordar Shnong ka Krang Pyllun to remove them. Addressing a press conference, they also took exception to the Synjuk who allegedly said that there is mushrooming of sordars in Krang Pyllun.When asked, the Sordar, Wood Mawlong stated that he does not know the reason behind the opposition by the Synjuk.The six sordars maintained that they have received their appointment letter from the Lyngdoh of Hima Sohiong along with demarcation of boundaries in Krang village which has over 11 villages under it.
Three-day national seminar on smart farming begins
SHILLONG: A national seminar on Smart Farming for Enhancing Input Use Efficiency Income and Environmental Security began here at ICAR on Tuesday. The seminar is being organised by the Indian Association of Hill Farming (IAHF) in collaboration with ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam. The brainstorming and technical sessions is expected to take research to a next level as the three-day national seminar will highlight on the theme “Smart Farming for Enhancing Input Use Efficiency Income and Environmental Security” (SFEIES). It will witness brain storming sessions from more than 300 participants from all over India. Agricultural diversification, processing and value addition along with entrepreneurship development and smart marketing linkages will play a key role for doubling farmers’ income and to achieve the Prime Ministers vision of food surplus India. The Chief Guest for the occasion, Ram Muivah, Secretary, NEC said that the farming models developed by the institute are well adapted by the farmers and that the north eastern region is rich in biomass and the institute should take initiative in the taking it further to another level and the farmers benefit the most from the research activities.
Mission Indradhanush fails to reduce infant mortality rate
Ampati: In South West Garo Hills district, even after four rounds of Mission Indradhanush, there has been high Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) due to many dropouts in routine immunization although the percentage of coverage is higher than that of overall state average. This was revealed in the meeting of the district task force on immunisation (DTFI), South West Garo Hills held at Ampati on Monday under the chairmanship of the Deputy Commissioner CVD Diengdoh to discuss the upcoming Intensified Mission Indradhanush (IMI) which would be launched from October 7. The meeting reviewed preparation of micro plan and district preparedness for implementation of IMI. IEC/BCC activities would be conducted in the villages to generate awareness among the rural masses and raise demand for immunisation services under IMI. It may be mentioned that after Mission Indradhanush failed to achieve the targeted immunisation coverage, IMI is being launched nationwide to ensure that it reaches children up to the age of two and pregnant mothers with all available vaccines and accelerate full immunisation and also sustain the same.
Meeting of SDRC held at Nongpoh
Shillong: The State Development Reforms Commission (SDRC) on Tuesday visited and held a review meeting with some departments including the District Commerce and Industries Centre, District Social Welfare Officer, District Child Protection Officer, Child Development Project Officer, Special Juvenile Police Unit, Divisional Forest Officer (Social Forestry), Executive Engineer PHE, Executive Engineer PWD (R), District Horticulture Officer, Superintendent of Fisheries, District Medical & Health Officer, District Rural Development Agency etc, in the DRDA conference hall, Nongpoh. The meeting had a deliberation on issues pertaining to district offices like budget provision of current financial year, functioning, programmes and activities of the different government offices in the district, state and central scheme being taken up by various departments, Act and rules implemented while executing of different scheme and project etc. The commission also took note of the problems face by the officers and assured that intimation to the government of the difficulties faces by them and proposed rectification if any. Suggestions were also made to the heads of the district offices for the success in the implementation and the overall benefit of the people of the district.
Disaster management training
MAWKYRWAT: The office of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), South West Khasi Hills district organised a training programme on disaster management at Horirai Higher Secondary School in Photjaud Rangthong on Tuesday. The programme aimed at creating awareness on the precautionary measures to be taken in the event of such disaster in order to mitigate, minimize and alleviate the suffering.Concepts of Disaster Management, Disaster Management Act, 2005 followed by demonstration on school based practices and mock drill were the topics covered during the programme.
Two struck by lightning
NONGSTOIN: A house at Nginiong village in West Khasi Hills was struck by lightning on Sunday at around 3pm and two occupants died on the spot. The deceased were identified as Kesling Wahlang (70) and Teskeinda Wahlang (34).The headman of Nginiong village submitted written information to the police who rushed to the scene to conduct spot enquiry and observe all necessary legal formalities.
Khasi movie Kynjah released
SHILLONG: Another Khasi film, Kynjah (Lonely) directed by Emdor Suchiang was released on Tuesday by noted Khasi film maker, Commander Shangpliang at Shillong Press Club. Elvistar Kharbudon, producer of the film, said the movie will be released on September 22 at Bijou cinema hall and will be shown for one week. “Acting and film making is an opportunity for youngsters to get employment in an age which is still grappling with unemployment,” he added. The story deals with the protagonist suffering from bipolar disorder. “People should watch the movie as it more of a suspense movie,” he said. Shangpliang urged the people to give their support by watching the movie. “It is difficult to come up with a CD as piracy is rampant,” he asserted. When asked, Kharbudon informed that the movie was made at a budget of Rs 50 lakh and the movie was delayed due to issues regarding GST.
