Congress condemns allegations against Rapsang
SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Pradesh Mahila Congress Committee and the Shillong city Mahila Congress condemned the unruly acts on the residence of MLA Paul Lyngdoh. With regards to the unwarranted accusations against the representable candidate of the Congress West Shillong constituency who had outwardly denied any hand in such insensitive acts, the committee said that he himself is a victim of similar unwarranted acts through vandalism, threats and verbal abuse.  The committee also condemned the unfounded accusations and allegations against Mohendro Rapsang that are aimed at maligning his personality and dignity for political mileage.

DC issues order against sale of tobacco to minors 
TURA: West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Pravin Bakshi has prohibited the sale of cigarettes and other tobacco products to minors, who are under 18 years of age, at market places and in areas within one hundred yards of educational institutions. The order also directed vendors and shops selling tobacco products to display a notice with a warning ‘Sale of cigarettes and other tobacco products to a person under the age of 18 years is strictly prohibited and is a punishable offence’. The order comes following reports of vendors and tobacco shops selling products to minors at the above mentioned places, was brought to his notice.

India Tourism holds Sachhata hi Sewa
SHILLONG: The office of India Tourism, Shillong, conducted the Sachhata Hi Sewa programme as per instructions given by the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, from September 15-October 2, in association with Institute of Hotel Management, Forest Department of Government of Meghalaya. Local authorities conducted several programmes in different locations in and around the state. The programmes were organised in celebration of the third anniversary of Swachh Bharat Mission and Gandhi Jayanti which falls on October 2. The places covered include Ward’s lake, Lady Hydari Park, Elephant Falls, besides other locations. A programme at Ward’s Lake was inaugurated by National Awardee Rita Ghose on Thursday.

Three-day seminar on farming concludes
SHILLONG: The three-day national seminar on “Smart Farming for Enhancing Input Use efficiency, Income and Environmental Security” came to an end at ICAR for NEH here on Thursday. Speaking on the occasion as the chief guest, MP Pralad Singh Patel said that India is an agricultural nation and alleged that the next green revolution will begin from the North Eastern states. The MP urged the ICAR scientists to remove the gap between the farmer and the scientist while adding that research in paper is of no use if it is not applied in the farmers’ field. The three-day seminar witnessed twelve technical sessions and various innovative recommendations came into light which was highlighted in the valedictory session.

Spiritual orientation programme organised
Shillong: OLMA (Our Lady of the Missions Association) a non-profitable organisation formed by RNDM Sisters along with well-wishing, service-oriented people held a Spiritual Orientation Programme at St. Mary’s Higher Secondary School Hall, Shillong on September 18. It was conducted by renowned Counsellors Bro. (Dr.) Varghese M.T, a Montfort Brother of St. Gabriel, and Loya Agarwala, an alumnus of Brunel University of West London. They spoke on the burning issue of the day – “Family Values & Changing Social Trends.”The programme was attended by around 300 parents and teachers. OLMA president Sister Philomena Kharakor welcomed the gathering and OLMA secretary general Ramesh Bawri gave the vote of thanks.

NEHUTA day observed
SHILLONG: The North-Eastern Hill University Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA) celebrated its 40th anniversary on the NEHU Permanent Campus on Thursday at the office of the NEHUTA in the university. The day was observed by hoisting the NEHUTA flag by XP Mao, the president of the association. Those who were present reaffirmed their commitment to fight for the just causes of teachers. It has also been reiterated that NEHUTA, as a responsible teachers’ body, is concerned about the systematic attempts being made to curtail the freedom of expression in the university campuses.

Digital financial literacy camp
NONGSTOIN: Financial Literacy Centre, Nongstoin conducted a Digital Financial Literacy Camp at Kynroh Community Hall in Mawthungper village in West Khasi Hills District on Thursday. The purpose of the camp was to impart knowledge to enable financial planning, inculcate saving habits and improve the understanding of financial products leading to effective use of financial services by the common man. It was conducted as per RBI guidelines using standardised financial literacy material of RBI, covering the topics on KYC, exercise credit discipline, Go digital using *99#,Go digital on the UPI platform and grievances redressers system. The counsellors also covered PMJDY Schemes and Prime Minister Social Security Schemes in detail. More emphasis was made by the team on PMSBY, PMJJBY & APY. The facilitator of the camp, Sunjuk Nongsynshar Shnong Lai Lyngdoh Area appealed the SBI officials for setting up of a bank branch at Kynroh for the benefit of the villages adjoining to Mawthungkper village.

School hall inaugurated
SHILLONG: The MDC of Tikrikilla, Dormonath Ch Sangma inaugurated a hall constructed at the premises of Tikrikilla Government UP and upgraded RMSA School as per the fund allocated by the MDC. The structure which was constructed under a central assistance scheme which is a first of its kind in the area.The event was graced by the local MDC as chief guest, Retd joint Director of School Education, PK  Hajong, Retd  Head Master Gauri Shankar Basumatary, social worker Walseng N Sangma among others. Prizes and certificates were also distributed during the programme.

Conclave for GH farmers
TURA: Multitudes of farmers and entrepreneurs from all over Garo Hills on Thursday gathered at the Marketing Conclave held at Ampati Multi Facility Centre. The Conclave, an initiative of the Meghalaya Basin Management Agency (MBMA) organised by the Basin Development Unit (BDU), Ampati, aimed at creating awareness on marketing of agricultural products and value addition.
