SHILLONG: Congress is expecting several Independent legislators, besides a legislator from a political party, to join its fold prior to the polls.
A Congress leader said on Sunday that the MPCC had already made a provision for the Independent legislators, who are now associated with the Congress, to join the party at an appropriate time so that they can contest on party tickets.
The Congress member said that though multiple forms were received from all the 60 seats, the Independent legislators will be accommodated.
The issues related to disqualification of MLAs, if they join any party now is delaying the process. “We are expecting six to seven legislators to join the party”, the party member said.
Sources said the NCP legislator from Mendipathar, Marthon Sangma, was also expected to contest on a Congress ticket.
As many as 106 forms were distributed by the Congress to the aspiring candidates to contest the polls.
September 15 was the last day for collecting the application forms from the party office which were distributed since August 31.
The last date for submission of application forms by the aspiring candidates to the respective Block Congress Committees is on October 4 and on October 31 the Blocks will submit the list of screened applications to the District Congress Committees.
The last date for the District panel to submit the recommended candidates to MPCC is November 22.
The MPPC will screen the recommended applications on November 30.
The Congress legislators, who did not take the application forms, include Rowell Lyngdoh, Prestone Tynsong, Sniawbhalang Dhar, Ngaitlang Dhar and suspended Congress legislator and KHADC CEM PN Syiem.
The party sources said there were multiple applications from the constituencies of these legislators who were set to leave the party.
