SHILLONG: The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), Regional Office, Guwahati, has informed that Aadhaar enrolment is completely free of cost.
UIDAI released the statement after it was noticed that some unscrupulous persons were charging Rs 100 per Aadhaar enrolment form from residents of a district in the State, which is illegal & violation of Aadhaar rules and regulations.
“As per rule, the Aadhaar enrolment forms must be available at the enrolment centres for the residents free of cost”, UIDAI said.
If any enrolment centre or enrolment operator is found charging money for Aadhaar enrolment, the office urged residents to inform UIDAI or they may also lodge a complaint to concerned District Authority.
The residents can contact the office on telephone- 0361-2228081/ 2228080 or by email- [email protected].
Appropriate legal action will be taken against those involved in such corrupt practices, the statement said.
In order to curb cases of charging or overcharging money by private operators for enrolment or update of biometric and demographic details, UIDAI has asked state governments to ensure that all enrolments, even those by private agencies, shift to government or municipal premises from external sites and ensure that they come under direct supervision of the authorities.
UIDAI said that at present, Aadhaar enrolment is going on in 8 districts and rest 3 districts of North Garo Hills, East Garo Hills and South West Garo Hills will be started shortly. It added that the total Aadhaar generation figure till date is 4,07,178.
Headmen’s role limited: An official of UIDAI said that people should get the forms only from the facilitation centres which are setup in different localities for enrolment and forms are not to be distributed by the headmen of the localities. “Taking forms from outside the facilitation centre is illegal,” the official said.
There were also complaints from many city residents that that they have to go to the residences of headmen who had asked for several documents for enrolment of Aadhaar.
