Mawprem in radar as Shillong police  intensify security for Durga Puja

SHILLONG:  Shillong Police have intensified the security in the capital city with special attention to Mawprem in view of the Durga Puja celebrations which is beginning on Wednesday.

Besides, Mawprem area in the last one month has witnessed violent incidents of a petrol bomb being thrown at the residence of the sitting legislator Paul Lyngdoh and even the CCTV cameras at the Congress office were damaged by miscreants.

East Khasi Hills SP, Davis Marak said that the one UDP leader identified as Gerald Shullai was involved in the damaging of the of the CCTV cameras at the Congress office in Mawprem.

“He is absconding and their family came to the police station and assured that they would cooperate with police to bring him back,” Marak said.

He said that police had intensified patrolling in the area as there was some political rivalry and which led to occurrence of violence earlier

“We feel the area is little sensitive and hence we have also given additional security to the MLA,” he said.

The local authorities earlier held meetings with the District Administration regarding security in the area and they were urged to install CCTV cameras in the locality.

One Michael Pakyntein was arrested by the police in connection with hurling of petrol bomb at the residence of the MLA, Paul Lyngdoh.
