NONGPOH: Rongmesek, around 11 km from here, has become one of the cleanest villages in Ri Bhoi district and the credit goes to the women in the village.
The women come together every Saturday morning to clean the village, which is also a popular destination for tourists for the Mawkyndur peak viewpoint and the Phrut Dak Lake.
The all-woman team has taken upon them the responsibility following the launch of the Swachh Bharat Mission in 2014.
The District Water and Sanitation Mission on Thursday conducted a programe on ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ in the village with an aim to promote Rongmesek as one of the tourist destinations.
Deputy Commissioner CP Gotmare, while addressing villagers at the event, lauded the initiative of the villagers in making Rongmesek one of the cleanest villages not just in the district but in the state and the country.
Gotmare further said the village has huge potential to attract tourist that will, in turn, boost local economy.
