TURA: A militant of the banned GNLA outfit who took part in several militant attacks, including two ambushes on police, have been nabbed by South Garo Hills police while he was taking shelter in a village in the remote southern district late Thursday night.
Based on intelligence inputs about the presence of a group of GNLA cadres in Dosogre village which falls in the jurisdiction of Baghmara police station, police commandos from the special force unit (SF-10), raided the village and caught a senior GNLA cadre identified as Bande Ch Marak alias Border who hails from Telikali village.
The arrested militant had joined GNLA in the year 2012 and told police that although he was part of 4th batch of recruits, he failed to complete the training.
He also said that he was part of the group of cadres who accompanied GNLA chief Sohan D Shira to different parts of Garo Hills providing their leader with security cover for the last two years.
He survived two recent police raids on their hideouts deep in the forests of South Garo Hills and during an encounter at Rongsu, in the same district two months ago. He escaped but lost contact with the other members of the outfit.
Unable to contact the other members he took shelter among civilians in the village when police caught up with him. He was arrested without any weapon.
The arrested ultra has reportedly confessed to police that he was present together with Sohan in two ambushes on police personnel at Kolapara and Panda reserve forests, a few years ago, in which several policemen were killed by the militants.
